Want to visit Katsuoji Temple and Minoh Falls on the same day?

While both sit in the scenic mountains of northern Osaka just minutes apart on a map, connecting the two is not as straightforward as it seems.

The Challenge: Connecting Katsuoji Temple and Minoh Falls

Many travelers assume there is a scenic bus or an easy walking loop between the two iconic spots. However, visiting both independently presents several logistical hurdles:

  • No direct public transit: There is no direct public bus linking Katsuoji Temple and Minoh Falls.

  • Demanding mountain terrain: While a hiking path connects them (approx. 3.5 km / 60 to 90 minutes), it is an unpaved mountain trail with elevation changes—not a casual paved sightseeing walk.

  • Limited taxi availability: Taxis rarely wait at the temple during regular hours, and hailing one via phone or app can be challenging during peak autumn weekends.

  • Time-consuming detours: Using public transit to get from the temple to the waterfall requires taking a bus back to Minoh-Kayano Station, transferring to another bus to Hankyu Minoh Station, and walking 40 minutes uphill along the valley trail.

Katsuoji Temple: Osaka’s Temple of Victory

Katsuoji’s heritage dates back nearly 1,300 years to 727, when twin hermit monks first established a training site in these serene mountains. Over the centuries, after prayers here reportedly healed an emperor, the sanctuary earned the prestigious name "Temple of Victory."

Today, victory at Katsuoji does not mean defeating an adversary. It represents overcoming your own internal doubts, discipline struggles, and personal barriers. This philosophy is embodied by thousands of iconic red Kachi-Daruma (Winning Daruma) placed across the complex.

Why Are There So Many Daruma Dolls?

The Daruma doll represents Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism. Its weighted, rounded base ensures that when knocked over, it always bounces back upright—symbolizing the Japanese proverb *Nana-korobi Ya-oki* ("Fall seven times, stand up eight").

1. Setting the Intention: Visitors choose a blank-eyed Kachi-Daruma and write their personal goal on the back.

2. The First Eye: You paint in the Daruma's right eye to seal your dedication.

3. The Achievement: Once your goal is realized, you fill in the left eye in gratitude.

4. The Dedication: Many travelers return their completed two-eyed Daruma to the temple’s communal shelves, creating a visually striking testament to thousands of fulfilled aspirations.

You will also encounter miniature Daruma-Mikuji tucked into mossy stone walls, staircases, and bridge railings. Each small figure contains a printed fortune slip that you can either keep as a souvenir or leave perched on the temple grounds.

Must-See Spots on the Temple Grounds

Set aside at least 1.5 to 2 hours to fully explore the 80,000-tsubo (approx. 260,000 m²) grounds:

  • Sanmon Gate: Originally reconstructed in 1603 by Toyotomi Hideyori, serving as the grand threshold to the sacred mountain.

  • Okiyome Bridge: A wide bridge spanning a pond where cooling purification mist rises across the water.

  • Kachi-Daruma Shelves: The photogenic centerpiece showcasing endless rows of returned Daruma dolls.

  •  Main Hall (Kondo): Enshrining the sacred Eleven-Headed, Thousand-Armed Kannon Bodhisattva.

Minoh Falls & The Scenic Valley Walk

Following Katsuoji, our route takes you directly to the upper trailhead of Minoh Falls (Minoo Waterfall).

Ranked among Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls, this 33-meter cascade flows into the lush river valley of Meiji no Mori Minoh Quasi-National Park. From the base of the waterfall, a gentle, paved 2.7 km path known as the Takimichi Trail follows the river downstream toward Hankyu Minoh Station.

The downhill stroll takes approximately 40 minutes at an unhurried pace, shaded by historic maple trees, traditional wooden tea houses, and tranquil shrines.

Try Momiji Tempura: Minoh’s Sweet Maple Snack

While walking along the Takimichi path, look for historic vendor storefronts frying Momiji Tempura.

These are actual Japanese maple leaves that have been preserved in salt barrels for an entire year, dipped in a lightly sweetened batter coated with sesame seeds, and deep-fried until crisp. It is a crunchy, aromatic regional delicacy unique to Minoh.

Best Season to Visit: Autumn Foliage (September to December)

The Osaka JOINER seasonal tour runs exclusively from September through December to highlight northern Osaka's natural transformation:

  • September to October: Refreshing mountain breezes, rich green canopies, and pleasant walking temperatures far cooler than downtown Osaka.

  • Mid-November to Early December: Peak autumn foliage. The temple grounds blaze in scarlet, amber, and gold, complemented by special evening illuminations on select November weekends.

The serene mountain atmosphere offers a striking contrast to bustling urban districts like Namba, Dotonbori, and Umeda.
